TEAMability Spotlight: Cortical Visual Impairment Month and the Big Give |
Dear *{{First Name}}*, This September, TEAMability is proud to recognize Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Awareness Month. CVI is the leading cause of visual impairment in children in both the U.S. and elsewhere in the developed world. |
What is Cortical Visual Impairment?
|
|
|
Unlike other forms of visual impairment that stem from the eye, CVI originates in the brain’s visual cortex. This lesser-known impairment results from damage or dysfunction in the brain’s visual processing area, making it a unique challenge for families and specialists alike, according to the UNC School of Medicine. |
| | |
At TEAMability, we offer the only clinic in San Antonio equipped to address CVI. With more than 80 of our clients experiencing this condition, we are committed to providing specialized support. |
|
|
|
Bonnie Jensen-Dubois, our dedicated Cortical Visual Impairment Program Coordinator, ensures that every child with CVI who comes to TEAMability receives the expert care they need to thrive.
Before founding TEAMability, I also served as a teacher for the visually impaired. This area remains close to my heart, too. I make a point to visit all of our clients with CVI and ensure they are flourishing at TEAMability. |

Support TEAMability during the Big Give |
As we raise awareness for CVI this month, we also look forward to the Big Give on Sept. 18-19. Your support now through the culmination of this event will enable us to continue providing critical services to children with CVI and other complex disabilities. Your generosity helps create a lasting impact on the lives of the families we serve. You can get inspired by reading more about our Big Give plans below.

At TEAMability, we are also excited to continue our mission of educating therapists who will carry on our work of supporting individuals with complex disabilities. This semester, we are honored to welcome several talented individuals who are completing internships and residencies with us.
Meet our newest additions to grow TEAMability services and expertise: |

|
-
Michala Janssen, DPT, a Pediatric Certified Specialist Resident from the University of the Incarnate Word, is completing her outpatient clinical experience.
- Jessie Thames and Dominic Jimenez, Doctor of Occupational Therapy candidates from UT Health San Antonio, are completing their Level II Fieldwork through November.
-
Jessica Degollado, a Speech and Language Pathology Assistant from Our Lady of the Lake University, is enrolled in her master’s program while interning at TEAMability.
-
Lheylani Williams and Janae Avila are Kinesiology students from the University of Texas at San Antonio completing their required internships while gaining firsthand experience in the impact of disabilities on individuals and families.
|
These students are learning alongside our experienced therapists, ensuring that future generations are well-prepared to continue the work we do. We’re excited to see them grow and develop during their time with us.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to partnering with you during the Big Give! Warm regards,

Support TEAMability during the Big Give |
As we prepare for the Big Give, follow TEAMability on social media to meet the amazing individuals who have been empowered by TEAMability!
Your support during the Big Give coming up on Sept. 18-19 can help us continue our mission to give individuals with disabilities, like Penny, who is pictured below, opportunities to achieve their potential and experience the joy of success. Using Eyegaze with her speech-generating device, Penny, who had been unable to eat or drink by mouth for two years, surprised her parents by initiating a request to “eat” and “drink.” Keep talking, Penny! Together, we can strengthen the team. |
